Homemade Dog Food
Isn't Raiden absolutely gorgeous?! Of course she is! We have had her for about 3 weeks now. She is 9 months old. Her birthday is September 28th 2016. She is a mix between a lab and a blue tick hound. She is the sweetest girl ever. She follows me all over the place. She is so amazing with the kids as well! We could not have gotten any luckier with getting such a perfect addition to our family!
When we first got Raiden, she was eating Purina Puppy Chow. Now that her bag is almost finished, I have decided to make her food.
Our local Karn's grocery store has a sale on chicken leg quarters for 49¢ a pound. I got about ten pounds for less than $5! What a steal! I put the chicken in a stock pot, covered with water, and boiled away. I used the chicken broth to make rice in my Aroma Rice Cooker. The rice turns out perfectly in that thing every single time!

My local SAMs club has a 50 pound bag of rice for about $16.
Karn's also has green beans on sale for 99¢ a pound, so I snatched some of those up too!

I chopped up the green beans and added them to the remaining chicken broth on the stove. I scooped them
out with a slotted spoon, and stored them in a freezer bag once they were cool. I did this same thing to a batch of brussel sprouts that I needed to use up. I read somewhere that brussels are one of the healthiest foods for dogs.

Don't forget to compost your veggie scraps!
Once the chicken was cooled, I picked it apart. I stored this in a freezer storage bag. I keep all my ingredients separate until I am ready to make a few days worth of food at a time. This way, if a certain ingredient doesn't agree with Raiden, I don't have to throw out a whole batch of food and cry myself to sleep over the wasted time and effort that I will never get back!
I gave Raiden about a half a cup of food to test out before bed. I mixed together some rice, chicken, and brussels; she freakin loved it!

It was getting late, and my baby was crying for me, so I threw everything in the fridge to finish tomorrow. I plan on making a few batches of food and freezing it. Once I know that everything agrees with her stomach, I will try different ingredients.
Update:
This morning I made Raiden some more food! She did great overnight with the food settling well with her stomach! I mixed together 2 cups of rice, 1/4 cup of the shredded chicken, 1/4 cup of the brussels, and I added in a few kidney beans. She freakin loved it! Matthew says "of course she loves it, she eats her own throw up!" Touché Matthew, touché!
Raiden ate most of her food, and she left a little bit for the cats to fight over. I have to check the ingredients to make sure they are safe for cats as well! I may just make them food also!
Disclaimer: if you are making your own pet food, research the ingredients to make sure they are safe for your furry family member! I'm just a stay at home mom that is too cheap to buy my baby food filled with artificial ingredients that expand in my baby's belly causing her to get sick. Also, I'm tired of cleaning up her throw up!

Doesn't that look amazing! It looks like something I would be happy to feed my kids!
